Scientifically proven: Vitamin D protects against tooth decay

Why vitamin D is crucial for healthy teeth

Vitamin D plays an essential role in bone metabolism and calcium absorption . Scientific studies show that vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of caries in children and pregnant women.

In a prospective Danish study, 315 pregnant women received 2,400 international units (IU) of vitamin D daily , while a comparison group received only 400 IU and a placebo. Children born to mothers with higher levels of vitamin D supplementation developed 50% fewer enamel defects than children in the other groups.

Another meta-analysis of 2,827 children showed that adequate vitamin D levels correlated with a lower risk of caries. A systematic review also confirmed that good vitamin D levels in pregnant women significantly reduce their children's risk of caries .

How vitamin D can prevent tooth decay

In addition to its role in calcium metabolism , there is evidence that vitamin D stabilizes the maturation of tooth enamel . Adequate intake could therefore not only strengthen bone structure but also support better tooth resistance to acid attack.

Dentists should therefore ensure that patients have adequate vitamin D levels and, if necessary, recommend supplementation. The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends:

Adults & pregnant women : 800 IU vitamin D daily

Infants : 400 IU vitamin D daily

In certain cases, higher dosages may be necessary for optimal results.
